Are Komodo tour guides trained in first aid?

Rangers who accompany visitors on Komodo Island and Rinca are primarily trained in wildlife safety and park regulations. Their expertise lies in managing encounters with Komodo dragons and ensuring visitors stay on designated trails. While they carry wooden forked sticks to redirect dragons if necessary, they are not certified medical responders and do not carry advanced medical kits.

The boat crews, however, including our team members Deni, Irwan, Edgar, and Fandy, undergo safety training that includes basic first aid and emergency response. Captain Amar holds maritime certifications that require knowledge of medical emergencies at sea. This means that if an incident occurs on the boat or during a beach landing, the crew can provide immediate assistance before evacuation becomes possible.

For medical emergencies that occur during island trekking, the crew and rangers will work together to stabilize the guest and arrange transport. Because the islands lack medical infrastructure, prevention and preparation are essential. We brief every guest on hydration, sun protection, and safe behavior before any trek. Following these guidelines reduces the chance that first aid skills will ever be needed.
