Is it safe to walk on Komodo Island with a ranger?

Walking on Komodo Island is generally safe when you stay with the park ranger and follow the established visitor routes. The trails are not fenced off from wildlife, which is part of what makes the experience interesting. A dragon can be beside a path, near a building, or resting under a tree, so the ranger’s job is to spot animals and manage the group’s movement around them.

For most visitors, the physical challenge is heat rather than the trail itself. The landscape can be dry and exposed, particularly in the dry season, and midday temperatures feel intense. Bring water, wear shoes with decent grip, and use sun protection. Longer trekking options involve more uneven ground, while shorter routes are manageable for most people with ordinary mobility.

The most important rule is not to wander away from the group. A dragon that appears slow from a distance can accelerate quickly, and brush can hide animals surprisingly well. Listen when the ranger asks you to stop or change direction. With that basic discipline, a Komodo walk feels much more like a guided wildlife trek than a dangerous encounter.
