What happens if I get separated from the boat on a Lombok to Sumbawa whale shark tour?

Getting completely separated from the boat is extremely unlikely because the guides manage group positioning carefully and the boat stays within a defined area during the whale shark encounter. However, if you do find yourself farther from the boat than intended, the protocol is simple: stay calm, float on the surface, and the guide or crew will come to you. The early morning conditions in Saleh Bay are typically calm, with light winds and minimal current, which makes it easy to stay in place and be located quickly.

Before entering the water, the guide explains how to stay oriented relative to the boat. Guests are advised not to chase whale sharks away from the group area and to check their position regularly. The guides are in the water with you and keep head counts throughout the encounter. The boat captain also maintains visual contact with the snorkelers from the helm. These overlapping layers of attention make separation a very rare event.

If you ever feel disoriented, raise one arm to signal and look for the guide’s fluorescent vest or the boat’s outline. Do not try to swim aggressively toward what you think is the right direction — floating calmly makes you easier to spot and avoids exhaustion. The crew knows these waters intimately and will have you back with the group within moments. As with all aspects of this tour, calm observation and following instructions eliminate virtually all risk.
