Mount Rinjani is located on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. Lombok sits just east of Bali, and the two islands are separated by the Lombok Strait. Rinjani rises in the northern part of Lombok within a protected area known as Gunung Rinjani National Park. The volcano is one of the most dominant geographical features in the region and can be seen from many coastal areas and even from parts of Bali on a clear day.
The mountain sits inside North Lombok Regency, and the surrounding landscape is a mix of traditional villages, rice fields, dense forest, and highland valleys. Two main villages provide access to Rinjani. Senaru is the gateway on the northern side and Sembalun is located in the highlands on the eastern side. These villages serve as the registration points for the national park and the starting areas for most trekking routes.
Rinjani is an active stratovolcano with an elevation of 3,726 meters, making it the second-highest volcano in Indonesia. Its caldera contains the well-known crater lake called Segara Anak along with an active cone that sometimes emits steam. This combination of volcanic features, forests, and mountain valleys creates one of the most dramatic environments in the Indonesian archipelago.
Visitors often come to this part of Lombok to experience the scenery around the mountain. Many stay in Senaru to explore waterfalls such as Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep. Others travel to Sembalun for its wide open landscapes and cooler climate. Even without climbing to the summit, being near Rinjani provides some of the best views and outdoor experiences available on the island.
