Can grandparents join a Komodo boat tour?

Grandparents join Komodo tours all the time, and multi-generational family trips are common on mid-range boats like our boats. There is no age restriction, and the crew on established vessels is experienced with guests ranging from young children to travelers in their 70s and 80s. The question is not whether grandparents can join, but what activities they can comfortably participate in once there.

The main challenge for older adults is the same as for anyone with limited mobility: the heat, the uneven trails, and the Padar hike. Komodo and Rinca ranger walks are generally fine for grandparents who walk regularly at home. The pace is slow, the ranger stops frequently, and the trails are relatively flat. Padar, however, involves rock stairs, no shade, and a significant uphill push. Many grandparents opt to stay on the boat during Padar, enjoying the peace and views from deck while the younger generation hikes. That is a perfectly reasonable division of labor on a family trip.

For booking, choose a boat with private cabins so grandparents have quiet space to nap and recharge. Full board meals remove the hassle of food planning. Confirm that the boat has basic first aid supplies and communication equipment, since the nearest hospital is in Labuan Bajo. If mobility is a concern, avoid the longer Lombok crossing in favor of the shorter Labuan Bajo round-trip. With those adjustments, grandparents often end up being the most appreciative travelers on the cruise-they have the perspective to recognize how extraordinary the landscape and wildlife truly are.
