Can tents blow away on Mt. Rinjani?

Tents can theoretically blow away if they’re not properly staked and guyed out. That’s precisely why our porters and guides at Lombok-Indonesia.org take tent setup seriously and have refined their technique over hundreds of camping nights on the mountain through every season and condition.

Wind at the crater rim can be strong, especially in late afternoon and early evening when temperature differences create gusts across the exposed campsite. But a properly pitched dome tent with all guylines fully extended and stakes driven deep into firm ground is extremely unlikely to lift off. Our team carries extra stakes and spare guylines for reinforcement, and they check tent security before everyone turns in for the night.

The most vulnerable moment is during initial setup, when a sudden gust can catch an unstaked tent like a sail and send it sliding. That’s why our porters work quickly and in teams to get everything anchored before the wind has a chance.

If you’re ever concerned about your tent’s stability during the night, ask a guide or porter to double-check the guylines. They’d rather adjust a tent at 5 PM than chase it across the crater rim at midnight. In practice, tent failures on Rinjani are almost unheard of for organized treks with professional operators. The bigger challenge for most trekkers is the noise of wind on tent fabric, which can make sleep difficult but poses no actual safety risk.
