How can you check whether a Mount Rinjani trekking company is officially licensed?

Ask for three things before any money moves: the company’s legal authorization as a trekking organizer, the park-issued identification cards of the guide and porters assigned to you, and a confirmed e-Rinjani booking code in your own name. Those three items are the licensing system on this mountain, and an operator who cannot produce them promptly is telling you something.

The rules are specific. The national park’s operating procedure defines guides and porters by identification cards issued by the head of the park authority, and it requires foreign trekkers to book through a registered trekking organizer. The park also publishes an online directory of operators where you can check a business name, contact details, location, and displayed permit fields. Use it, but do not trust it blindly: directory entries have been found with blank license fields, so a listing proves the operator registered, not that the guide walking with you holds a current card.

So verify at the crew level, not just the company level. Ask who your actual guide and porters will be, request their names and park ID numbers in writing before you pay, and ask again at the trailhead registration so you can see the cards yourself, which is a completely normal request and one we welcome from our guests. Also ask whether any association membership is claimed, and understand what it means: membership in a guides association and a park-issued card answer different questions, and only the card is the legal credential.

The red flags are consistent across resellers and unlicensed outfits: prices quoted without itemization, reluctance to name the guide before payment, promises that the permit will be sorted out later, and requests to pay a deposit to a personal account. A licensed operator has a business name that matches the park directory, a guide with a card that matches the name you were given, and a booking code that matches your passport. Ask for all three, check that they match, and the licensed companies will pass while the others start explaining. That contrast is your answer.
