How can you tell whether a Mount Rinjani tour company operates its own treks or resells bookings to another guide?

Ask one question first: who walks with you? A real operator can answer with names, a reseller has to check with someone else. The licensed guide and porter system on this mountain is built on park-issued identification cards, so the company running your trek knows its crew by name well before departure, and that knowledge is the cheapest possible test of who you are actually talking to.

Work the same test down the chain of practical details. A company that operates its own treks owns its equipment and can tell you exactly what you will sleep in: the tent condition, the sleeping bag ratings, whether a toilet tent is included, where the gear is stored between trips. It employs or consistently works with named guides and porters and can state its crew ratios, one guide per six domestic hikers at minimum and no porter carrying over 25 kilograms, and it can describe how food is bought and carried. A reseller resells, so answers to all of the above come back general, hedged, or forwarded to somebody else.

Then verify the paperwork yourself, which catches both resellers and unlicensed outfits. Check the company name against the national park’s online operator directory, ask for the names and park ID numbers of your assigned guide and porters in writing, and request your e-Rinjani booking code once issued. The directory alone is not proof, since entries have shown blank license fields, so treat it as a starting point and the named crew cards as the real credential. If the company stalls on naming a guide before payment, that stall is the answer.

We are based in Senaru with our own homestay, our own guides and porters, and our own equipment, so our guests meet the crew and inspect the tents before the trek starts. That is the standard a real operator can meet anywhere on this mountain: a base you can point to, a crew with names, gear you can touch, and a permit code that matches your passport. Demand those four things in writing, and resellers identify themselves almost immediately.
