Yes, you need a diving license to join a Komodo liveaboard diving tour. Most dive boats require at least an Open Water certification because many of the dive sites in Komodo have strong currents, deeper sections, and changing conditions. Having a license ensures that you understand basic safety procedures, can control your buoyancy, and can communicate effectively underwater with your dive guide.
Licensed divers will have access to a wider range of sites, including drift dives, manta cleaning stations, and deeper coral walls. Dive guides in Komodo choose locations based on the skill level of the group, and having certification allows you to participate fully without restrictions. It also helps the crew plan suitable dive times and routes for everyone on board.
If you do not have a license, you can still join a regular Komodo cruise and enjoy all the snorkelling spots, hikes, and island visits. Some boats also offer introductory or discovery dives, but these are limited to shallow areas and are not a substitute for joining a full liveaboard diving itinerary.
If you want to get certified before your trip, many dive centers in Bali, Gili Islands, and Labuan Bajo offer Open Water courses that can be completed in a few days. This gives you the training you need to safely enjoy the incredible dive sites that Komodo National Park is known for.
