It is strongly recommended that you know how to swim if you plan to join a Komodo snorkelling tour. Many of the best spots in the national park, such as Manta Point, Taka Makasar, and Siaba Besar, are located in open water with currents that can change throughout the day. Even with a life jacket, feeling comfortable in the water makes the experience much safer and more enjoyable.
That said, some non swimmers still choose to join the tour as long as they stay close to the boat and follow the crew’s instructions. You can hold on to the boat or float using a life jacket while watching the marine life from the surface. The crew is experienced and will guide you to calm, shallow areas where the water is easier to manage. However, this option limits what you can do, and you may not be able to join all snorkelling spots.
If you are not confident in your swimming ability, it is important to tell the crew before entering the water. They can recommend the safest areas or advise you when it is better to stay on the boat. Many travelers still enjoy the cruise experience even if they skip some of the deeper snorkelling locations.
For the best and safest experience, having basic swimming ability is ideal. If you want to practice ahead of your trip, even a few lessons can make a big difference in your comfort and confidence during the Komodo adventure.
