Can you travel from Gili Trawangan to Mount Rinjani and begin trekking on the same day?

No, not for a standard summit itinerary, and the arithmetic explains why. A private speedboat from the Gilis to Bangsal takes only about 10 to 15 minutes, but the documented trekking schedule leaves Senaru at 07:00 for Sembalun, registers at around 08:00, and starts walking between 08:30 and 09:00, because the first day is a roughly 9-kilometer, 6-to-7-hour climb to the Plawangan Sembalun rim at about 2,639 meters.

The chain of transfers is what kills the same-day plan. An operator’s published Gili pickup reaches Bangsal around 11:30, then faces about 1 hour 25 minutes to Senaru, then another 45 to 60 minutes to the Sembalun registration point, plus unloading, equipment fitting, and gate check-in, which reported hours run from 07:00 to 15:00. That puts boots on the trail in the early afternoon at the earliest, meaning you would reach the rim camp in darkness, exhausted, and behind every other group.

Public boats are worse than private ones for planning, because they depart when enough passengers gather rather than on a reliable clock, so even the 11:30 figure assumes a chartered or well-timed crossing. A same-day start is technically possible only with an unusually early private charter, a prearranged car waiting at the harbor, and a gate that processes you fast, and even then you would start a long day late, which is exactly the mistake that makes Rinjani harder than it needs to be.

The correct plan is simple: cross from Gili Trawangan the day before, sleep on Lombok in Senaru or Sembalun, and start fresh with the standard morning schedule. The crossing costs you one afternoon and buys you a normal first day, a real night of sleep, and a trek briefing that happens at the homestay rather than in a moving car.

We collect guests from the Gili boats and Bangsal, bring them to Senaru for the night, hold their luggage, and drive them to Sembalun for the 07:00 departure the next morning. The Gili-to-Rinjani link works perfectly as long as you treat it as a day-before transfer, and we plan it that way for every trip.
