Can you finish a Mount Rinjani trek and catch a boat to Gili Air on the same afternoon?

Yes, it is possible, but treat it as a conditional connection rather than a guaranteed one. A standard three-day summit itinerary brings trekkers down into Senaru village around 13:00 to 13:20 in the afternoon, and the drive from Senaru to Bangsal harbor takes roughly one hour and twenty-five minutes. On paper that puts you at the harbor between about 14:25 and 14:45, before you subtract showering, collecting bags, buying tickets, or any delay on the descent.

For the connection to work, three things must line up. Your group has to finish on schedule, since the final day includes a five to six hour walk down from the Senaru rim and slow parties routinely arrive late. The public boat must still be running, and there is no reliably published last departure to Gili Air, because local boats at Bangsal often wait for enough passengers rather than leaving at a fixed time. And the sea has to cooperate, since afternoon crossings are occasionally disrupted by wind and waves.

Book the boat in advance if you can, confirm the actual cutoff time with the boat operator directly, and keep a fallback plan: a night in Senaru or elsewhere on Lombok, or a private speedboat charter from Bangsal or Teluk Nare, which is priced as a whole-boat hire and can leave when you are ready. Never attach a nonrefundable hotel night on Gili Air to an afternoon arrival you cannot control.

We allow this connection for our guests only with the plan written down. Our guide sends word ahead when the group is on pace, the vehicle waits at the Senaru trailhead, and your clean clothes and boat bag come out of storage so you can change quickly. If the group is running late, the guide will tell you by mid-morning so you can switch to the fallback rather than racing a harbor that may already be quiet.

Two small habits save the day: keep your passport and some cash accessible rather than buried in the duffel you stored, and ask the guide at breakfast for an honest exit-time estimate. If the answer is after 14:00, take the fallback and enjoy a calm night on Lombok instead.
