Yes, arriving from Bali and starting your Rinjani trek the next morning is a normal, workable plan, provided you actually land in Lombok with enough afternoon left to transfer north. A fast boat scheduled out of Padangbai in the morning can reach the Gilis or Lombok by midday, and a direct flight into Lombok airport followed by the roughly 3.5-hour road transfer to Senaru also fits comfortably into a single afternoon.
What makes the plan work is what you do with the evening. Sleep in Senaru or Sembalun, do the trek briefing and gear check at the guesthouse, and start with the standard schedule, which leaves Senaru at 07:00 for the 45-to-60-minute drive to Sembalun registration and an 08:30 to 09:00 walking start. Arriving from Bali the evening before costs you one holiday day and buys you a first hiking day that starts like a trek instead of a commute.
What makes the plan fail is weather and timing. Fast boats between Bali and Lombok have been stopped or delayed indefinitely on harbor authority instructions because of waves, wind, rain, and visibility, and a suspension announced at midday can erase your evening arrival. That is why, for a date-specific permit, we recommend flying into Lombok rather than betting on a boat, and we recommend a full buffer day whenever the itinerary is tight or the crossing happens during the windy season.
Three details protect the plan. First, make sure your permit is booked for the correct date and gate before you leave Bali, because the ticket is date-specific. Second, arrange your arrival pickup in advance, including any late-night surcharge if you land in the evening. Third, ask your operator in writing what happens if the boat or flight is canceled, who pays for extra nights, and whether your permit can be rescheduled.
We collect guests from the airport or the harbor, drive them north, host them in our Senaru homestay with luggage storage for the trek, and start them at 07:00 the next morning. Arrive the day before, sleep on the mountain’s doorstep, and the plan holds almost every time.
