Is it better to stay in Senaru or Sembalun the night before your Mount Rinjani summit trek?

Both work, and the published summit itineraries mostly stage guests in Senaru the night before, then drive them to Sembalun at 07:00 for registration and an 08:30 to 09:00 walking start. That 45-to-60-minute inter-village drive in the morning is the normal pattern, not a sign that sleeping in Sembalun is required, because no park rule forces a Sembalun overnight before a summit trek.

The case for Senaru is logistics and recovery. Senaru is where most operators base themselves, where point-to-point summit-and-lake routes finish, and where luggage storage is easiest, since your bag can simply wait at your homestay while you are on the mountain. It sits at a comfortable elevation for a first night, and the evening trek briefing happens naturally at the guesthouse rather than over the phone. The trade is the early morning drive, which costs some sleep but nothing else.

The case for Sembalun is the extra morning rest. Sleeping at the trailhead village removes the 07:00 drive and lets you roll out of bed closer to registration, which matters for guests who arrive late or hate early cars. The trade is baggage: if your trek enters at Sembalun and exits at Senaru, a bag left in Sembalun needs an agreed plan for who moves it, when, and at what cost, so confirm that in writing before you pay.

How to decide: base it on your arrival time into Lombok, how much sleep you will actually get, and where your bags need to end up. A guest arriving from Bali at midday reaches Senaru comfortably by evening. A guest landing late might prefer whichever village the operator can reach with a driver they trust.

We host our guests in Senaru the night before, hold their suitcases for the whole trek, drive them to Sembalun for the 07:00 start, and meet them back in Senaru at the finish, where the shower and the bag are already waiting. It is the arrangement that removes the most moving parts from the morning, and it is what we recommend unless your arrival schedule makes Sembalun the better fit.
