Your realistic options are a different date on the same route, a different entry gate with its own quota, or a reschedule if you already hold a ticket, because Rinjani’s daily allocation is capped and split by entrance. The published quota totals 700 trekkers per day across six gates: 150 for Sembalun, 150 for Senaru, 100 for Torean, and 100 each for Aik Berik, Tetebatu, and Timbanuh. Sembalun places selling out does not free up Senaru places, since the allocation is route-specific.
If your preferred date is full at your chosen gate, first ask about nearby dates on the same route. Weekday departures carry less pressure than weekends and public holidays, and the peak dry-season months fill fastest, so shifting by even one day often solves the problem. Second, consider a bookable entry itinerary your group can actually complete: a Senaru rim trek instead of a Sembalun summit route, for example, if Senaru still has allocation and the itinerary matches your fitness and time.
If you already hold a ticket, the park allows a single rescheduling for the same registered trekkers, subject to remaining quota and a request no later than the day before the trek. Request it early through your operator or the park administrator, because a reschedule is not guaranteed and quota for the new date can close too.
Two traps deserve a warning. A closed route’s nominal quota is not inventory you can buy: during recent wildfire disruptions, gates reopened on different schedules, and one route stayed closed even as five others opened, so a full-looking calendar can also be an unavailable calendar. Second, a quota number is not a campsite reservation or a guaranteed trail time, it is only permission to enter on that date through that gate.
Book as early as your travel plans allow, especially for the July to September high season, and let your operator watch the calendar for you. We track availability daily during the season, and when a preferred date fills, we present the nearest workable combinations of date, gate, and itinerary rather than promising a place that the system will refuse at check-in.
