What happens if your fast boat from Bali to Lombok is delayed before your Rinjani trek?

A delayed fast boat puts your permit date at risk, and the consequences run from a rushed registration to a completely lost trek, because your Rinjani permit is tied to a specific date and the entry gate closes check-in at 15:00. Boats from Bali, typically departing Padangbai, have been stopped or delayed indefinitely on harbor authority instructions because of high waves, strong wind, rain, and poor visibility, and these are documented events, not hypothetical ones.

The immediate risk is arithmetic. A boat scheduled to leave Padangbai in the morning, with an early check-in, still needs to arrive, unload, transfer you north by road for several hours, and get you to the gate before check-in closes. A delay of a few hours consumes the entire margin, and an indefinite suspension consumes the day. If the boat does not sail, you miss registration, and the ticket for that date is wasted unless the park’s rescheduling allowance saves it.

That allowance is narrow but real: a Rinjani ticket can be rescheduled once for the same registered trekkers, subject to remaining quota and a request no later than the day before the trek. That means a same-day call is already too late for the reschedule option, which is why prevention beats rescue. When a Bali crossing is critical to a date-specific trek, build in at least one full buffer day and cross the day before you need to be at the gate.

Before you pay for anything, ask your operator in writing who covers what when a sailing fails: replacement transport, extra accommodation, and any lost permit or rebooking fees. Operators can often rebook or reroute a road and sea itinerary, but a public ferry substitution is not a guaranteed arrival, and no operator can force a boat to sail in bad weather.

We plan Bali arrivals with the same rule we apply to Gili crossings: be on Lombok the night before your trek, and treat the boat as the day-before transfer. Flying into Lombok airport instead of taking the boat is a genuine alternative, and for tight itineraries during the windy season it is the choice we recommend, because a road delay costs hours while a canceled sailing costs days.
