The sea conditions during the whale shark encounter itself are usually quite calm, because the boats depart at 04:30 to 05:30 in the morning when the wind is light and the water is at its most settled. Many guests describe the surface of Saleh Bay at sunrise as glassy or gently rippled — perfect for snorkeling and photography. This early timing is one of the reasons the encounter experience feels so peaceful and manageable, even for travelers who are not used to ocean activities.
The longer journey between Lombok and Sumbawa, however, involves a ferry crossing and open water that can be rougher, particularly during the rainy season from November to March. The ferry ride itself is typically manageable, but choppy seas are more common in the wet season months. The dry season from April to October generally offers smoother crossings and calmer seas overall. If you are prone to seasickness, bringing medication and sitting in the fresh air during the ferry ride is a good strategy.
The team monitors weather closely and will adjust the itinerary if heavy seas or strong winds make conditions unsafe. The whale shark boat is small and agile, designed for the sheltered bay environment, not for rough open water. The crew will not take the boat out if the sea state exceeds safe parameters. Most guests find the water conditions during the actual encounter to be far calmer than they expected.
