Is there cell phone service on Mt. Rinjani?

Cell phone service on Mt. Rinjani is basically nonexistent once you leave the trailhead. In the lower villages near Sembalun or Senaru, you might catch a weak signal from Indonesian carriers like Telkomsel or XL. But once the trail enters the forest and climbs toward the crater rim, the mountains block reception entirely. There are no cell towers on the volcano itself.

The topography of steep ridges and deep valleys makes even satellite phone connections unreliable in some areas, and our guides don’t carry satellite phones as standard equipment. They do carry their own communication devices for emergencies, but these are reserved for operational use and aren’t available for guest calls or social media updates.

Before the trek, let your family know you’ll be unreachable for a couple of days. Give them our operations team’s emergency contact number and arrange a check-in time for after your expected return. Many travelers actually find this digital disconnection to be one of the unexpected pleasures of the experience.

No notifications, no emails, no mental clutter. Just you and one of Indonesia’s most dramatic landscapes. If you absolutely need to be reachable for an urgent reason, consider postponing the trek or arranging coverage with a colleague. The mountain demands your full attention anyway.
