What happens in a medical emergency on a Komodo cruise?

In a medical emergency, the crew’s first step is to assess the situation and use the boat’s first aid supplies to stabilize the guest. Every vessel in our network, from our boats to our premium partners, carries a well stocked first aid kit and the crew has training in basic response protocols. If the situation is beyond what can be managed onboard, the captain will use the radio or satellite phone to contact Labuan Bajo immediately.

The next decision depends on severity and location. For minor issues, the boat may alter its route to reach a ranger station or return to Labuan Bajo as quickly as possible. For serious emergencies, evacuation to the basic hospital in Labuan Bajo is the priority. However, that hospital has limited capabilities. Severe trauma, complicated fractures, or cardiac events may require evacuation to Bali, which involves coordinating flights from Labuan Bajo airport and arranging ground transport on arrival.

This is why we emphasize travel insurance during the booking process managed by Alvaro and Trip. Insurance that covers medical evacuation can save you from catastrophic bills and delays. Before you book, we also ask guests to disclose any chronic conditions or medications so we can plan accordingly. Komodo is remote, beautiful, and wild, but that remoteness means response times are longer than in a city.

Being honest about your health and carrying proper coverage is the best way to protect yourself. If you take daily medication, bring extra supplies. If you have a history of medical issues, let us know during intake. Preparation does not ruin the adventure. It lets you enjoy it fully without lingering worry about what happens if something goes wrong.
