What happens if someone gets swept away while snorkeling in Komodo?

If someone is carried away by current, the crew’s first job is to keep visual contact and recover the swimmer by boat. On well-run Komodo trips, the captain and crew know the planned direction of a drift and position the vessel accordingly. The guide in the water can signal the boat while the swimmer uses a life jacket or flotation device to stay visible and conserve energy.

The exact response depends on the site and conditions. A tender boat may be used at some locations, while at others the main vessel moves to the swimmer. This is why crews do not want guests fighting the current or swimming off in a different direction: a predictable drift is much easier to manage than a person who disappears behind a point or separates from the group.

Prevention is still far more important than rescue. Listen to the briefing, wear flotation when the guide recommends it, and stay close enough that the crew can see you. If you do become separated, keep your head above water, signal clearly, and avoid exhausting yourself trying to swim directly against a powerful current. Good operators plan their snorkeling stops so that recovery is possible, but guests still need to follow the system.
