Are there spiders on Mt. Rinjani?

Spiders are around, especially in the lower forested sections where webs between trees and shrubs catch the morning dew. But none of the spider species on the mountain are dangerous to humans, and they pose zero threat to trekkers.

Indonesia has some visually impressive spiders, including golden orb-weavers that build webs large enough to span paths. But these are completely harmless and actually pretty cool to observe if you’re not arachnophobic. The volcanic upper slopes above the tree line have very few spiders because the cold, windy environment doesn’t support the insect populations they eat.

Our guides at Lombok-Indonesia.org don’t even mention spiders in safety briefings. No trekker in their extensive experience has ever needed medical attention for a spider issue. If you’ve got a severe fear of spiders, the lower forest trail might test you briefly. But once above the tree line, you won’t see them and can focus entirely on the scenery.

Standard outdoor awareness is plenty: avoid walking face-first through dense vegetation in early morning when webs are most visible, shake out your boots before putting them on, and appreciate that spiders are a normal part of a healthy forest ecosystem rather than a threat to your safety.
