Are there toilets on Mt. Rinjani?

Yes, there are basic toilet facilities at designated campsites along the trekking routes, but you absolutely need to manage your expectations because these facilities represent the absolute minimum standard of sanitation. Think functional, not comfortable.

The national park maintains simple long-drop toilet structures, essentially holes in the ground with basic enclosures for privacy, at the main crater rim campsites and lake areas where trekkers spend their nights. These facilities see heavy continuous use during peak season when hundreds of trekkers pass through weekly, and there’s no flushing mechanism, running water, or regular cleaning service. They serve the essential biological function, but comfort and hygiene are not part of the package.

Most trekkers describe them as a step above squatting in the bushes but far below anything you’d find at a maintained campground back home. Bring your own toilet paper because supplies run out. Hand sanitizer is absolutely essential since there’s no water for washing. Lombok-Indonesia.org’s team does what they can to maintain reasonable camp hygiene, but the facilities themselves are what they are.

It’s part of the authentic wilderness experience, just not the glamorous part that makes it into Instagram posts. Accept it, prepare for it, and don’t let basic bathroom conditions overshadow the incredible natural beauty surrounding you. Most people find that after the first day, they stop worrying about it entirely and focus on why they’re actually there.
