There are no permanent toilets on Mount Rinjani because the mountain is a protected national park with minimal structures. The terrain is rugged, the campsites are natural open areas, and the park restricts construction in order to preserve the environment. For this reason, trekking companies are responsible for providing their own sanitary setup at camp. At the Sembalun crater rim and Senaru crater rim campsites, our team sets up a private toilet tent so hikers have a clean and discreet place to use during the night and early morning. This portable toilet system is maintained by the porters and provides far more comfort and privacy than using the open ground.
On the trail itself, there are no built facilities of any kind. The paths cross forested terrain, volcanic slopes, ridgelines, and open savanna areas, and it is not possible to install toilets along these sections. During the hike, if someone needs to use the restroom, the only option is to step away from the trail into a discreet area. In true emergencies, hikers must follow Leave No Trace principles. This means choosing a designated spot away from water sources, digging a small hole when possible, and covering everything carefully to protect the environment. Proper disposal is part of keeping the mountain clean and preventing contamination of the natural landscape.
The summit route also does not have built toilets because the terrain is steep, rocky, and exposed. However, our team sets up a toilet tent at the crater rim camp, which is the base for the summit attempt. This is the only location on the mountain where a toilet tent can safely be used. It provides the privacy and cleanliness needed before and after the early morning ascent, when most hikers are preparing for the climb or recovering after returning from the peak.
Because Rinjani is a remote and rugged environment, hikers should be prepared for simple conditions. The toilet tent at camp offers comfort during overnight stays, but the active trekking zones require flexibility and outdoor bathroom awareness. Responsible use of designated areas, covering waste when necessary, and respecting the environment all help keep Rinjani clean and enjoyable for everyone.
