Can I drink the water on Mt. Rinjani?

Don’t drink untreated water directly from streams or springs. It might contain bacteria, parasites, or volcanic minerals that can wreck your stomach. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to bring your own purification system or lug excessive bottled water up the mountain.

Our trekking packages at Lombok-Indonesia.org include drinking water for the entire trek. The porters boil or filter water at camp to make sure it’s safe and free from the bugs that cause traveler’s diarrhea. They also prepare tea and coffee with boiled water, which is both safe and psychologically comforting on cold mornings at the crater rim.

If you run low between camps, our guides can point you to stream sources and treat the water for you, or share from their own supply. You’re never in a position of choosing between dehydration and drinking untreated water. Some trekkers bring personal filter bottles as backup, which is reasonable but unnecessary when trekking with an organized team that handles water safety as standard.

The most important habit is drinking enough volume throughout the day. Dehydration at altitude compounds fatigue and can mimic altitude sickness symptoms, so the team encourages regular sipping and provides more than adequate water for the trek duration.
