Is it cheaper to book Mount Rinjani trekking directly with a local operator or through GetYourGuide?

Neither channel wins automatically, and anyone who tells you booking direct always saves the platform commission is selling you a slogan rather than arithmetic. Marketplace commission rates are set per contract between the platform and each supplier, and industry analyses describe rates around 25 to 30 percent, so the commission is real, but what you save by going direct is not the commission, it is whatever the two sellers decide to charge for the same trek.

Look at real published prices and the picture gets messy fast. One direct operator lists a three-day Sembalun to Senaru trek at 295 US dollars per person shared or 335 private for a small group. A GetYourGuide listing for a comparable-sounding Rinjani summit trek starts at 153 dollars, and a Viator small-group listing starts at 220 dollars. On headline price the marketplace undercuts the direct operator, which is the opposite of the folk wisdom. The catch is that these are not the same product: different suppliers, different crew ratios, different equipment, different inclusions, and completely different cancellation terms.

That last difference is where channels genuinely diverge. The inspected marketplace listings ranged from cancellation up to 24 hours before departure to strictly nonrefundable, while direct operators set their own terms, one commonly holding a 25 percent nonrefundable deposit. The platform gives you a structured checkout and a disputes process if the supplier fails; a direct booking gives you a named person who answers the phone and can tell you which guide walks with you and what condition the tents are in.

The method that actually works is forcing a like-for-like comparison. Get a written direct quote and a marketplace checkout quote for the same operator, the same dates, the same route, and the same inclusions, then compare the all-in totals and the refund terms side by side. Nine times out of ten the differences reveal themselves immediately: the cheaper listing excludes the park fee or the transfers, or the direct quote bundles the homestay night the platform charges separately.

We sell direct because it lets us answer those questions concretely: our guides, our porters, our equipment, itemized in writing before you pay. But we tell guests to compare honestly, including the marketplace option, because a well-informed booking beats a doctrinaire one, and the best price is the one that includes everything you assumed was in it.
