What questions should you ask a Mount Rinjani trekking operator before paying a deposit?

Ask all of them in writing before any deposit leaves your account, and treat the quality of the answers as the real product. The first cluster is identity and permits: what is the company’s legal name and its authorization as a trekking organizer, who are the actual guide and porters assigned to you, can you see their park-issued identification cards, is your date actually bookable, and when will you receive the e-Rinjani code in your name. Foreign trekkers must book through a registered organizer, and a licensed operator answers these questions quickly and specifically.

The second cluster is the money. Ask for an itemized total: does it include the foreign entrance fee of 250,000 rupiah per person per day, and for exactly how many chargeable days. Then walk the exclusions one by one: the pre-trek night, each transfer, every meal, drinking water, the toilet tent, the sleeping kit, gear rental, tips, personal insurance, and a personal porter if you want one. Refuse the phrase fully inclusive as an answer; the price only counts when it is itemized.

The third cluster is crew and equipment. How many paying guests share each guide and porter, what maximum weight does each porter carry, who carries the communal supplies, and can you inspect the tents, sleeping bags, and first-aid kit before the trek starts. The park’s staffing standards give you the benchmarks to ask against: no porter over 25 kilograms, and a guide-to-hiker ratio your operator should state without hesitation.

The fourth cluster is the hard scenario: if one person turns back, which named guide escorts them, who stays with the party, how do the two groups communicate when signal fails, and are extra escort wages or transfers charged. Then the money version of the same question: what cash refund, date move, or credit follows an official closure, an illness, or an early descent. One operator’s published terms hold a 25 percent nonrefundable deposit and no refund for unused on-trail services; marketplace listings range from 24-hour cancellation to strictly nonrefundable. Knowing which regime you are buying is worth more than any discount.

We answer this whole list in writing as a matter of course, because an operator confident in its guides, equipment, and permits has nothing to hide. Book with whoever answers you in specifics, and the trek you paid for is the trek you will get.
