Absolutely yes: the Senaru rim trek is built exactly for this. It climbs about 9.5 kilometers, normally 6 to 8 hours, through rainforest to Plawangan Senaru at about 2,641 meters, where the whole caldera opens below you: the blue-green Segara Anak lake, the volcanic cone inside it, and the rim walls opposite. You sleep at the edge of that view, watch sunset and sunrise over the crater, and you never commit to the 1,087 meter summit climb or the steep lake descent.
The rim view is not a compromise version of the summit view, it is a different experience. From the summit you look down on the lake from almost directly above and across Lombok toward the coast; from the Senaru rim you sit level with the caldera, close enough to watch the lake’s color change through the afternoon. Guests who cannot or do not want to hike scree in darkness lose almost nothing of the volcano-and-lake spectacle.
If you want the water itself, you need a lake itinerary rather than a rim-only one. The hot springs and the lakeshore sit near 2,000 meters, reached by descending from a rim and climbing back out, which is why a lake visit costs an extra day. A rim-only trek sees everything from above; a lake trek touches it. We explain the difference at booking, because the words lake view on a rim itinerary and a lakeside camp describe two different products.
This route also suits a wide range of hikers. The Senaru forest approach is shaded for most of the morning, the gradients are steadier than the eastern savanna, and families with teenagers or fit older guests regularly complete it. The only real demands are the length of day one and a cold, exposed night at altitude, so bring proper layers and a four-season sleeping arrangement.
Honest summary: if the summit is not your goal, do not buy a summit package. The rim trek delivers the volcano, the crater lake, and one of the highest panoramic campsites on the mountain without the hardest hours Rinjani can offer, and for many of our guests it is the better trip, not the lesser one.
