Mosquitoes can be found on the lower parts of Mount Rinjani, especially near the starting points around Sembalun and Senaru where the climate is warm and humid. In these lower elevations, hikers may notice mosquitoes during the first hour or two of the trek, particularly in forested or grassy areas. Using a bit of repellent at the beginning of the hike is usually enough to keep them away.
Once you gain elevation, the temperature drops and the environment becomes much drier and windier. Mosquitoes do not live at higher altitudes, so by the time you reach the crater rim there are usually none at all. At the campsites on the Sembalun and Senaru rims, mosquitoes are extremely rare, and at the summit they do not exist. The colder nighttime temperatures prevent them from surviving at these heights.
Because of this, mosquito concerns are mostly limited to the very start and very end of the trek. Many hikers bring a small bottle of repellent but never end up needing it beyond the first section of the trail. Overall, mosquitoes are a mild annoyance on Rinjani rather than a major problem, and they disappear completely as the elevation increases.
