Can I charge my camera on Mt. Rinjani?

There are no charging facilities on Rinjani, and you shouldn’t expect electricity at any of the campsites. Once you leave Senaru or Sembalun, you’re completely off the grid until you come back down. This isn’t a place with power outlets hidden behind rocks. It’s the real deal.

This means your camera, phone, headlamp, and any other electronics must survive on the battery power you bring. For photographers, this is huge, because the summit sunrise, the crater lake, and the sweeping rim views are some of the most photogenic moments of the entire trip. Running out of battery halfway through would be a real letdown. You don’t want to miss that summit shot because you were careless about power.

The standard advice from Lombok-Indonesia.org is to bring spare camera batteries fully charged, and keep them warm in your sleeping bag at night. Cold temperatures drain batteries faster, and Rinjani gets very cold after dark. A small portable power bank can keep your phone alive for emergency communication and photos, but remember you can’t recharge the power bank either.

Some trekkers switch their phones to airplane mode for the whole hike to conserve power. Treat every bit of battery as precious once you’re on the mountain, and plan your photography around what you carry in. The views are worth the extra battery weight.

If you’re serious about photography, bring a headlamp with fresh batteries too. You don’t want your light dying during the summit push in the dark.
