Can I hike Mt. Rinjani if I’m afraid of heights?

You can absolutely hike Rinjani with a fear of heights, but you need to be honest with yourself about your specific triggers and talk to us about them honestly before booking anything. Different people have different thresholds, and what bothers one acrophobe might not bother another at all.

The most challenging section for anyone with a genuine fear of heights is the final summit approach. The trail narrows to a volcanic scree ridge with significant drops visible on both sides for approximately thirty to forty-five minutes depending on your pace. While the footing itself is generally stable, the exposure is real and undeniable. If that description makes your stomach drop just reading it, the summit push might legitimately not be worth the psychological torture for you. And that’s completely okay.

That said, a huge portion of the Rinjani trek happens on wider trails without dramatic exposure. The crater rim camping, the stunning lake views, the lower forest sections, and the general mountain atmosphere are incredible and don’t require staring down vertical drops or hugging cliff edges. The 2D1N Crater Rim trek or the 3D2N Full Experience might be much better fits than the summit push if heights are your primary concern. You still get amazing views and a genuine Rinjani experience without the most exposed section.

Our guides at Lombok-Indonesia.org can position you strategically in the group to minimize visual exposure to drop-offs, set a pace that keeps your eyes focused on the trail ahead rather than the edges, and talk you through the sketchiest sections step by step. Some people find trekking poles surprisingly helpful because they give your hands something deliberate to focus on and create a sense of additional stability.

Bottom line: don’t let a fear of heights automatically exclude you from Rinjani, but don’t pretend it doesn’t exist either. Tell your guide. Be specific about what triggers you. We can usually work around it, suggest alternative routes, or modify the itinerary to give you an amazing experience without the terror. There’s no shame in knowing your limits.
