Yes, overweight individuals can and do successfully climb Mount Rinjani, and at Lombok-Indonesia.org we’ve guided trekkers across the full spectrum of body types to the summit. The critical factor isn’t your weight on a scale. It’s your cardiovascular fitness, your joint health, and your mental determination. We’ve had heavier trekkers complete the 3D2N package and love every minute of it. We’ve also had relatively thin trekkers struggle because they lacked conditioning. The mountain doesn’t care about your BMI.
It cares about whether your heart and lungs can sustain hours of uphill walking and whether your knees can handle the descent. That said, carrying extra weight does mean more strain on joints, especially knees and ankles, during the steep downhill sections. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for anyone with joint concerns, and they make a noticeable difference for heavier trekkers. Proper footwear is also essential. Running shoes or casual sneakers won’t provide enough ankle support or traction on volcanic scree.
We offer gear rental through our partner shop, including proper trekking boots, which we’d recommend for anyone concerned about stability or joint strain. It really depends on your individual situation. If you’re overweight but active, if you can walk for several hours without extreme discomfort, and if you don’t have significant knee or back problems, you can probably do Rinjani. If you’re overweight and sedentary, with no hiking experience, the trek will be very difficult and potentially risky. We’re happy to discuss your specific situation before you book, and we’ll recommend the 3D2N package and possibly the Crater Rim option if we think that’s a better fit.
