Is climbing Mount Rinjani harder than climbing Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia?

Neither mountain is simply harder: Kinabalu goes higher, while Rinjani is rougher underfoot and longer on the legs. Sabah Parks lists Kinabalu’s Low’s Peak at 4,095.2 meters, about 369 meters higher than Rinjani’s 3,726 meter summit, so if altitude is your only measure, Kinabalu wins. But difficulty is an itinerary question, not a summit-elevation question.

The setups differ in kind. Kinabalu is a managed climb: a registered mountain guide is required, the standard Timpohon route ascends about 6 kilometers with roughly 1,300 meters of gain on the first day, and the overnight stop is a resthouse with accommodation and meals, including dinner and breakfast at Laban Rata. Rinjani’s summit itinerary sleeps in a tent on the crater rim at about 2,639 meters, then attempts the 3,726 meter summit before dawn on loose volcanic sand, with roughly 4 hours budgeted for the push and about 1.5 hours for the return. One is a lodge with a kitchen, the other is a campsite with a wind problem.

Underfoot conditions and recovery are where Rinjani bites. The measured three-day Sembalun-to-Senaru traverse covers about 33.74 kilometers with roughly 4,200 meters of cumulative ascent, on ground that includes scree, ridgelines and long descents, while Kinabalu’s trail is a constructed path with roped sections and queues in the dark. Kinabalu’s optional via ferrata routes, such as the introductory 380-meter course, are separate paid activities, not part of the ordinary summit walk, so do not judge the standard climb by them.

Prepare for each mountain separately. Comfort on Kinabalu does not prove tolerance for Rinjani’s loose ground, camping and repeated descents; comfort on Rinjani does not guarantee comfort at Kinabalu’s higher altitude, where the air is thinner than anything Rinjani asks of you. If you are planning both, build training that covers both bases: hill days with a pack for Rinjani, and realistic expectations about altitude for Kinabalu. Both are achievable for ordinary fit hikers with the right preparation.
