There are exposed sections with steep slopes and drop-offs on Mount Rinjani, but they’re localized rather than defining features of the entire trek. The most significant exposure is on the summit ridge, where the trail narrows and steep slopes fall away on both sides. It’s not a sheer vertical drop, but it’s exposed enough that a stumble in the wrong spot could send you tumbling down a steep scree slope with serious consequences.
Our guides manage this section by controlling the group spacing, setting a careful pace, and providing reassurance to trekkers who find it mentally challenging. Other exposed areas include the descent from the crater rim to Segara Anak lake, where the trail switchbacks down a steep hillside. Again, it’s not a cliff walk, but a slip here could result in a long slide down a rocky slope.
Our guides are experienced at choosing the safest lines and pacing the descent so no one feels rushed or unsafe. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for these sections because they provide extra points of contact and stability.
At Lombok-Indonesia.org, we don’t sugarcoat the exposure. We want trekkers to know what they’re getting into.
If you have a significant fear of heights or a history of panic attacks in exposed places, we should discuss whether the summit attempt is right for you. For most people, the exposure feels manageable with a guide beside you, proper gear, and a calm, steady pace.
