You can’t directly call for help from most of the mountain because there’s no cell service. But our guides at Lombok-Indonesia.org carry communication devices and are trained to send alerts to base and coordinate rescue or medical assistance when needed.
These devices might include satellite communicators, radios, or simple cell phones used at lower elevations where intermittent signal exists. Our guides know the exact spots on the trail where emergency contact is most likely to work.
If an emergency occurs, the guide will delegate someone to stay with the injured person while they move to a location with better signal or use their own device to raise the alarm with our operations base in Senaru.
Trekkers climbing without a licensed guide face a much bigger problem. With no communication capability and no one to go for help, they’re truly isolated in an emergency. That’s one of many reasons independent trekking is strongly discouraged by park authorities and responsible operators alike.
Before the trek, Lombok-Indonesia.org provides an emergency contact number for our operations team that family or friends can call if they don’t hear from you by the expected return time. The system works reliably, but it requires that you are trekking with a professional team that knows how and when to use it.
