In theory, almost anyone with reasonable baseline health and fitness can climb Mount Rinjani, but ‘anyone’ needs some qualification. Rinjani isn’t a technical climb requiring ropes or mountaineering skills. It’s a trek.

But it’s a serious trek at high altitude over rough volcanic terrain with significant elevation gain and cold temperatures. If you can comfortably complete a three to four hour hike with steep sections at home, you can probably handle Rinjani with preparation and the right guiding team. That said, some conditions make it inadvisable or unsafe.

We don’t recommend Rinjani for pregnant women, especially in later trimesters, because of the physical strain and remote location with limited evacuation options. People with uncontrolled asthma, serious heart conditions, or recent surgeries should consult their doctor first. Bad knees or back problems don’t automatically disqualify you, trekking poles and a slower pace help a lot, but you should be realistic about your limitations.

Panic attacks or severe fear of heights can be problematic on the narrow summit ridge. At Lombok-Indonesia.org, we assess each booking individually through pre-trek communication. We’re honest about whether we think someone is prepared, and we’ll recommend the 3D2N package or even a non-summit option if we think that fits better.

The mountain will still be here next year. We’d rather you come back prepared than push through unprepared and have a bad or dangerous experience.
