Honestly, if you’re completely out of shape, Mount Rinjani is going to be miserable at best and potentially unsafe at worst. This isn’t gatekeeping. It’s a genuine safety concern. The summit push requires sustained physical effort for two to three hours in freezing temperatures on loose volcanic scree. If your cardiovascular system isn’t conditioned for that, you’re putting yourself at risk of exhaustion, poor decision-making, and hypothermia.
The mountain doesn’t negotiate with unfit trekkers. That said, ‘out of shape’ covers a wide spectrum. If you’re a bit soft around the edges but you can still walk for a few hours without collapsing, you might be fine with a month of focused preparation. If you haven’t done any meaningful physical activity in years and get winded walking up a flight of stairs, you need more time. We’d recommend at least six to eight weeks of consistent training, or choosing a less demanding package like the 2D1N Crater Rim, which skips the summit scree but still delivers a beautiful Rinjani experience.
At Lombok-Indonesia.org, we’d rather have an honest conversation about your fitness than sell you a package you’ll regret. We can help you assess whether you’re ready and suggest a realistic timeline for preparation. If you’re not ready now, the mountain will still be here in three months. Rinjani isn’t going anywhere, and neither are we. Come back when you’ve put in the work, and we’ll get you to the summit.
