How narrow is the summit ridge on Mt. Rinjani?

The summit ridge on Mount Rinjani is narrow enough to get your attention, but it’s not a knife-edge where you’re balancing on a foot-width of rock with death on both sides. At its narrowest point, the ridge is probably two to three meters across, which sounds wide until you’re on it in wind and darkness with steep slopes falling away on either side. The exposure is psychological as much as physical.

Your brain knows that a stumble could be serious, even if the actual trail width is manageable. The ridge isn’t narrow for the entire summit approach. Most of the climb is on wide scree slopes where exposure isn’t the issue.

The narrow section comes near the very top, in the final few hundred meters to the true summit. Our guides at Lombok-Indonesia.org manage this by spacing the group appropriately, advising on foot placement, and providing physical and moral support to anyone who finds it mentally challenging. They also know alternative routes and turn-around points if weather or conditions make the ridge unsafe.

If you have a severe fear of heights, this section might trigger it. You should discuss that with us before booking.

For most trekkers, the narrow ridge feels exhilarating rather than terrifying, especially when you reach the summit and the 360-degree views hit you. The key is trusting your guide, focusing on each step rather than the exposure, and remembering that thousands of people walk this ridge safely every year.
