Is Mt. Rinjani safe during the rainy season?

Mt. Rinjani is officially closed to trekking during the rainy season, typically January through March. The combination of heavy rainfall, slippery volcanic trails, reduced visibility, and increased risk of flash floods and landslides makes it genuinely unsafe for organized groups and independent trekkers alike.

The national park authority enforces this closure for excellent reason. Trails become streams of mud, the volcanic scree on the summit ridge turns into a sliding hazard, and the risk of injury from falls, rock slides, or river crossings rises dramatically with sustained wet conditions.

Lombok-Indonesia.org respects this closure completely and doesn’t operate on the mountain during the off-season. Instead, we offer beautiful alternative hikes to Nangi Hill and Pergasingan Hill, which are lower elevation and accessible year-round with proper guidance.

Some unlicensed local guides may offer illegal treks during the closed season to earn money from desperate or uninformed travelers. These are dangerous, uninsured, unsupported by emergency services, and potentially fatal if conditions deteriorate. If you’re visiting Lombok during the rainy months, our alternative hikes are genuinely beautiful in their own right, with lush green landscapes and fewer crowds. But they don’t replace the Rinjani experience. Wait for the April reopening, book your permits early, and enjoy the mountain under safe, permitted, professionally managed conditions.
