What happens to your Rinjani tour if the Senaru or Torean trail is temporarily closed?

A closure of the Senaru or Torean trail does not automatically cancel your Rinjani trek, but it does force a decision: reschedule the ticket, reroute through an authorized gate, or, for parties already on the mountain, follow the directed safe exit. The exact instruction comes from the national park, and it is route-specific, so never assume that a closed trail means the whole mountain is shut, or that an open gate means your route works.

The most recent wildfire season is the clearest example. Torean was closed after fire damaged the route, with reporting on damaged ropes, unstable ground, and falling rock hazards, and it stayed closed even after five other entrances reopened. Senaru was also temporarily shut when fire advanced toward the Pelawangan Senaru camp, and it reopened only after suppression and assessment. Two gates, two different timelines, from the same fire event.

For ticket holders, the park’s response in that closure was specific: affected Senaru permit holders were offered either a move to another date or an entry and exit through Sembalun. That is a park-authorized diversion, not a self-service route change, and it is the model for how closures get handled: the administrator amends the booking, and the operator rebuilds the logistics around it. Parties already trekking were directed to exit via Sembalun, which is a ranger instruction that overrides any promised itinerary.

What this means for you as a guest is mostly about timing and paperwork. Before your trek, your operator must confirm the current route notice, secure either the rescheduled or rerouted ticket, and renegotiate transport pickups and camp plans to match. During your trek, a closure announced mid-route means the guide and rangers decide the safe exit, and a sold Senaru rim night or Torean descent is simply no longer part of the trip.

We check route status with the park daily during the season, and we brief guests honestly when their route is affected. The honest line we give is that the mountain, not the marketing calendar, decides the final route, and our job is to have the authorized alternative ready before you need it.
