Stop the summit push immediately and regroup with your guide in a clear, safe area away from the smoke line, because smoke on the summit trail means the plan is over and the exit decision has begun. Relay your position through the guide’s radio to the park information center and follow the instructions from the park or SAR teams, not the itinerary you paid for.
The mountain’s recent fire seasons show how fast this becomes real. A fire advancing toward the Pelawangan Senaru camp forced a closure of the Senaru route, and the trail reopened only after suppression and assessment, while another route stayed closed even as five gates reopened. Smoke moves with wind and slope, so a camp that was safe at noon can be threatened by evening, which is why the official instruction, not your planned campsite, decides where you sleep.
While moving, protect your airways and eyes: a cloth or mask over the mouth helps with coarse smoke, though it does not make a closed trail passable, and contact lens wearers suffer first. Do not descend blindly into a smoky valley, never cross a fire line or an area of active burning, and do not assume a previously safe campsite remains safe, because fire changes the ground underfoot as well as the air. Falling limbs and unstable ground are part of a fire’s aftermath.
The honest operational note is that there is no separate published smoke-specific checklist from the park, so the procedure in practice is the general emergency one: abort, regroup, radio, and follow the directed exit. That is why the guide’s radio, the group’s regroup rules, and an agreed turnaround plan matter on every trek, not just in fire season.
We watch fire and route notices daily during the dry months, brief guests on the regroup protocol before departure, and cancel or reroute a trek when the notices say so, absorbing the disappointment rather than the risk. Smoke on Rinjani is an operational problem with an established answer, and the answer is always the same: down and out, following instructions, with the summit waiting for a cleaner day.
