What are the main dangers on mount rinjani?

Mount Rinjani is a beautiful but physically demanding mountain, and there are several real dangers that hikers should understand before attempting the trek. The most common risk is falling, especially on steep or loose terrain. The summit route is covered in volcanic sand that shifts under your feet, and the descent can be slippery even for experienced hikers. Losing balance on these sections can lead to injuries, which is why proper footwear, trekking poles, and a steady pace are so important.

Another danger is dehydration or lack of water awareness. The climb from Sembalun is exposed to the sun, and the long ascent can cause hikers to tire quickly if they do not drink enough. Even though porters supply all required water, hikers still need to hydrate consistently to avoid dizziness, nausea, or exhaustion. Heat, sun exposure, and altitude can combine to make dehydration a serious issue for those who are unprepared.

Poor preparation is another major factor in many Rinjani accidents. Hikers who arrive with inadequate clothing, improper shoes, or no understanding of how difficult the trek is often struggle in the more challenging sections. The mountain requires stamina, balance, and proper equipment. People with underlying health conditions, those who are significantly overweight, or those who are not used to uphill hiking are more likely to run into difficulties. Altitude can also make breathing harder, especially during the summit push, which adds to the strain.

Weather is a further risk. Sudden rain can make the trails slippery, increase the chance of falls, and reduce visibility. Strong winds near the crater rims can also affect balance and create uncomfortable conditions. These dangers are part of the reason the mountain is closed from January to March each year, when conditions become too unsafe for trekking.

With proper preparation, a trained guide, and the right understanding of the challenges, Rinjani is manageable for many hikers. However, ignoring these dangers or attempting the climb without the right fitness level or equipment can lead to serious problems on the mountain.
