Can beginners get altitude sickness on Mt. Rinjani?

Beginners can absolutely get altitude sickness on Mount Rinjani, and in some ways they might be more susceptible than experienced trekkers simply because their bodies haven’t adapted to the stress of high-altitude exertion before. However, susceptibility to altitude sickness has surprisingly little to do with fitness level or trekking experience. It has more to do with genetics, rate of ascent, hydration, and individual physiology. We’ve seen super-fit beginners feel terrible at 2,800 meters and out-of-shape beginners feel fine at the summit.

Your body either adjusts well to altitude or it doesn’t. For beginners, the biggest risk factor is ascending too quickly. The 2D1N Summit package compresses a lot of elevation gain into a short timeframe with minimal rest, which doesn’t give your body time to adjust.

The 3D2N Full Experience is much better for beginners concerned about altitude because the slower pace and extra night at intermediate elevation allow for gradual acclimatization. Our guides also monitor beginners more closely for early symptoms like headaches, nausea, and unusual fatigue, because beginners might not recognize these signs or might attribute them to normal exertion. At Lombok-Indonesia.org, we tell beginners that altitude sickness is possible but rarely serious at Rinjani’s elevation.

The most important things are to stay well-hydrated, eat regularly even if you don’t feel hungry, communicate openly with your guide about how you’re feeling, and trust the guide’s judgment about whether to continue or turn back. Beginners who are honest about their symptoms almost always do fine. The ones who try to tough it out silently are the ones who get into trouble.
