What fitness level do I need for Mt. Rinjani?

The fitness level you need for Mount Rinjani is best described as ‘reasonably active and willing to prepare.’ You don’t need to be an athlete, a gym regular, or a seasoned mountaineer. But you do need to be able to walk for several hours on steep, uneven terrain without falling apart. Think of it this way. If you can comfortably complete a three to four hour hike with significant elevation gain at home, you’re probably in the right ballpark for Rinjani. The trek demands three main things from your body.

Cardiovascular endurance for the sustained uphill sections, especially the summit push. Leg strength for the steep descents that destroy untrained quads and knees. Mental resilience for the cold, the dark, the exhaustion, and the knowledge that the scree slope is going to fight you for every step. You don’t need to train like you’re running a marathon, but a month of consistent preparation makes a noticeable difference. Stair climbing, hill walking, and squats are your friends here.

At Lombok-Indonesia.org, we ask every client about their fitness level before booking, and we’re honest about whether we think they’re ready. We’d rather you spend three weeks getting in shape and love the trek than book tomorrow and suffer through it. If you’re unsure, the 3D2N package is more forgiving than the 2D1N. And if you’re genuinely concerned about your fitness, we can suggest preparatory hikes or training routines that will get you ready without requiring a gym membership.
